Behavioural interview questions start with "Tell me about a time when..." or "Give me an example of..." The best way to answer them is using the STAR method:
S — Situation
Set the scene. Describe the context and background without going into too much detail.
T — Task
Explain your specific responsibility or challenge in that situation.
A — Action
Describe the exact steps you took. Use "I" not "we" — interviewers want to know your contribution.
R — Result
Share the outcome. Quantify it where possible ("reduced costs by 20%", "the project launched two weeks early").
Example
"Tell me about a time you handled a difficult client."
S: A major client was unhappy with a delayed deliverable. T: I was the account manager and needed to resolve it. A: I called them immediately, acknowledged the issue, and offered a revised timeline with daily updates. R: The client stayed, and we renewed their contract at a higher value."
